Yeah, it's puzzled me as well until I read Kurt Anderson and Heather Richardson Cox, and that's when it dawned on me that when you layer superficial christianity and hyper-capitalism over each other for three centuries, this is what you get, a new synthetic religion that justifies greed and selfishness.
