The reasoning here is exactly the problem I’m talking about. Quitting the gym was a “personal decision” in the sense that I risked bringing home a deadly virus to my family every time I went there. So now my only avenue to fitness is walking in a neighborhood without sidewalks and doing exercises in a corner of my house, a stop gap that’s been prolonged by the simple fact that *other* people won’t take on any personal responsibility by masking or social distancing. By “society,” I mean the larger institutions, prevailing attitudes, and leaders who govern our choices. Like you point out, these are run by people. But if we don’t demand more of them, then they’re not going to give it to us.
