That’s a pretty good point — small talk as ritual. I’ve learned some of the ritual, but you’re right. Part of my problem is that my range of small talk doesn’t include church or sports. Put me in a room full of geeks and nerds, and we could talk all day. But is that still small talk? I don’t know.
