That makes sense. I originally wrote this as a humor piece, after I spoke with a couple of people early in their careers who were spending too much time on little things like business cards and blazers rather than their content.

I had no idea this many people would wind up reading it! My context is different. As an academic, I spend a lot of time getting to know the people in my field through journal articles, books, and websites. Now that I think about it, most conferences I go to have a program book. If I go to a presentation, I already have their name and institution on the schedule.

I may write a follow-up piece to this since there have been a lot of good comments.
