Indeed, it's very difficult and full of backslides. The idea of a happy ending is especially destructive, as you point out, because it sets up an unattainable goal that makes people feel horrible about themselves. Good mental health takes ongoing maintenance, and it doesn't really jive with our cutthroat predatory form of capitalism.
