I think politeness has been secretly working against us, though. Other pieces on here have shown how civility and manners are often used to silence people who want to speak uncomfortable truths. Calling someone an idiot isn’t just rude, for example. It’s degrading. My point is that you can treat people with respect without perpetuating the hidden rules that are often used to punish and exclude those who didn’t pass through the cookie cutter.
