5 Ways to Radically Transform Your Life, Starting Now

Think outside yourself.

There’s a problem with self-improvement, and I think we already know what it is. We need someone to come out and say it:

We’ve made it all about us.

There’s something way bigger out there.

We’ve been improving ourselves so we can achieve what we want, without giving any thought to the kind of world we’d wind up living in if all we thought about was our own habits and mindsets. That was the theme song of the last decade, millennials trying to recuperate our lost wealth by hustling and grinding — becoming paragons of growth. Now some of us are starting to look around at the larger world.

We see, it’s in trouble.

We’ve witnessed what comes from a culture of influence where we maximize our happiness and productivity, crafting lives in imitation of people who’ve amassed fortunes for themselves, and who’ve learned all the right things to say to polish their reputations.

The world can’t take too much more of this. It can’t support 8 billion people all trying to “be best.” If we want to live happier, more fulfilling lives, we have to do more than improve ourselves. We have to look at the bigger picture. We have to imagine a world without us at its dead center.
